Perishable, RI’s Research & Development Theatre Announces 2008-2009 Season! Celebrating its 25th year and more determined and committed than ever to uphold its mission to connect RI audiences with groundbreaking works for the stage. Perishable Theatre, RI’s one and only research and development theatre is proud to announce its brand new and exciting offerings for the 2008-2009 season. “My second full season will introduce RI audiences to the work of artists you haven’t heard of yet, but will be watching for years to come,” states Perishable Executive Artistic Director Vanessa Gilbert. “Perishable’s programming focuses on new performance that comes straight from the lab to you.” The 4th Fledgling Festival August 7-August 17, Thursdays-Saturdays 8pm, Sundays at 3pm Perishable Theatre’s Fledgling Festival is 4 and it promises to be an experimental theatre extravaganza! The 14th International Women’s Playwriting Festival October 2- November 2, Thursdays-Saturdays 8pm, Sundays at 3pm Don’t miss the event that has launched women playwrights to Broadway, regional theatres, and numerous awards. Three winning one-act scripts receive production and are presented alongside acts by local women performing artists. Each performance includes a post show talk back. The 14th International Women’s Playwriting Festival is dedicated to Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and RI resident, Paula Vogel. Bad Money by Meg Miroshnik, directed by Vanessa Gilbert February 20-March 8, Thursdays-Saturdays 8pm, Sundays at 3pm *World Premiere 25-year-old go-getter Agnetta is thrilled to be starting her new job as a VP for a booming multi-national corporation in an emerging market. But returning to work in her native country reveals mysteries about Agnetta’s family and their shady relationship with the country’s currency. Might Agnetta become her mother? Will Agnetta close the deal? Can you really go home again? Meg Miroshnik’s new play is a comedy about market forces, relative morality, and the ambivalence of globalization. The Thing That Ate My Brain... Almost by Amy Lynn Budd, directed by Connie Crawford April 24-May 10, Thursdays-Saturdays 8pm, Sundays at 3pm *World Premiere In 2002, dancer Amy Lynn Budd discovered she had been invaded. By a brain tumor. In this performance about the diagnosis of and subsequent living with a chronic genetic condition, the artist combines burlesque dance, puppetry, and the genre of 1960’s sci-fi movies to affirm that creativity and curiosity are the best medicine. Plus the Now or Never….Ever Series, One Night showings of various performances that you’ll have to tell all your friends about! Blood From a Turnip-continues to present the latest in short form puppetry for adults in this twelve-year-old late night series. Sometimes themed, always inspiring, Blood From a Turnip hasn’t changed its formula or ticket price since 1997. Live/Whirled-This series created by Perishable Artistic Director Vanessa Gilbert and Live/Whirled Music Director, mandolinist Marilynn Mair, is designed to present great music with an unexpected twist. Each concert features two different artists or groups who will each perform a set of their own music, and then combine forces for an on-the-spot jam session that can also include any audience member who brings an acoustic instrument along and wants to join in.
